Many of you have probably wondered how jewelry is made. In this series we’d like to share a few facts about it, starting with the very first stage: CAD jewelry design.
From the first idea to the moment a finished design appears in our store, every piece goes through several stages. Here we focus on one of them — designing the jewelry on a computer, in the Matrix jewelry CAD software. We’ll walk you through the whole process using one of the models available in our store. The first step is to draw the curves that form the outline for placing the stones.
Next, we place the stones on these curves.
The next step is to build the seats that will hold the stones.
Then come the prongs that secure the stones — they make the jewelry more durable. Setting stones with metal prongs is a better solution than gluing them, and it has to be planned at this stage already.
In the next step, we can multiply the stones and their settings across the whole dome of the piece, and the model starts to look like a finished ring, pendant or pair of earrings.
The setting elements are then merged into one whole, starting from the center.
Next, the central elements are merged with the following row of settings.
This completes the merging stage.
Now the prongs are adjusted and the seats are prepared to fit the exact dimensions of the stones.
In the next step, for a pendant, we can add a small ring that attaches the pendant to its bail.
The result is a pendant model ready for 3D printing. The printed model then goes on to casting, and the cast silver piece is hand-finished in our workshop in Rumia, Poland — but those are the next stages of the story.
That brings the design stage to an end. The final result of this process is pendant 1763, available here: Sterling silver pendant with cubic zirconia 1763
